Reduces cellular ageing, protects your skin from the sun and improves the skin's general appearance.
DESCRIPTION:
Astaxanthin is a natural pigment from the carotenoid family. It has incredible antioxidant benefits (it's far superior to beta-carotene for example) by capturing the free radicals responsible for cellular aging. Astaxanthin protects the skin from the damaging effects of the sun (but does not replace UV protection) and helps make the skin more supple and better moisturised (which stops wrinkles forming).
In addition to that, it has benefits for our immune, nervous, and cardiovascular systems as well as anti-inflammatory effects and it decreases the symptoms of macular degeneration (age-related deterioration of a certain part of the retina).
Astaxanthin can be found found in crustaceans, certain fish and plants (such as haematococcus pluvialis, a microalgae which gives those creatures that ingest it a reddish colouring) and red animals.
DID YOU KNOW?
Shellfish (such as lobster or shrimp) change colour during cooking. In fact, heat releases the astaxanthin in these crustaceans by breaking down the protein layer this pigment was trapped in.
SIDE EFFETCS :
There are no known side effects with astaxanthin. It is still advisable for pregnant and breastfeeding women to seek advice from a health professional before taking any supplements.
